Man in a Box

In this painting, the many perspectives of the objects are fascinating. The shapes of the objects give strong rhythm and the soft, somber colors bring a feeling of peace. This is one of the finest of inmate painting. The composition is tight and balanced asymetry. The man confined in the box is quiet -- resigned to his confinement -- he is in prison and the outdoor world is represented by the blue sky -- the bars of the cell prevent his access to the outdoors. He no longer looks outdoors; he is within himself, in deep meditation. The cell contains other boxes as well as that where the man is -- (Other boxes are in the cell, other shapes -- what do they contain? -- what ideas? what dreams and hopes? -- this is the mystery found in this painting.
